Traveling New Technology Roads

The intersection of technology, finance, and faith
One of the reasons Paul was so successful in spreading the good news about Jesus was speed. He could move quickly because God placed him in a time and place where the Roman Empire had already built the roads and postal networks that reached the edges of the known world. That infrastructure was part of God’s provision for advancing the gospel.
The “roads” our communication and resources travel on are no longer made of stone and dirt—they’re digital.
We live in a similar moment. But the “roads” our communication and resources travel on are no longer made of stone and dirt—they’re digital. They run in the cloud and are built with code. They carry messages in split seconds and can move money in minutes. It’s a long way from filling a chest with gold and hauling it back to Jerusalem.

Now on the one hand, this new infrastructure gives ministries unprecedented freedom to operate. On the other hand, its complexity exposes us to new risks our predecessors never had to imagine. So, as we stand at the proverbial crossroads of the future, we want to identify two inextricably connected trends that will define the next five years of our financial and technological world—realities we don’t have the luxury of ignoring.
Two Vital Technology Trends
Trend 1 — Technology Is Infrastructure
Infrastructure once meant roads, ports, and power grids. Today it means cloud servers, mobile networks, and code. This shift is why the pace of change feels faster than ever—because it is. Software can be rebuilt in hours; no bricks, no concrete, no asphalt required. That speed creates opportunity, but it also breeds fragility.
Destroying a road system is no easy task, yet a server outage or cyberattack can freeze resources and stall a ministry in seconds. Leaders must shift their perspective and understand that technology is not merely a workplace tool, but serves as the backbone of the modern world—and by extension, our ministry operations.
Trend 2 — Money Is Accelerating
The same digital systems that empower ministries have also accelerated global finance. Trade flows don’t just pass through New York City, London, or Beijing anymore—more than 100 emerging and frontier economies are now tightly connected. Capital, goods, and payments move at incredible speed. Over $7 trillion dollars trade on international currency markets everyday–orders of magnitude larger than the New York Stock Exchange.
Wider access opens new partnerships and global reach.
For ministries, this represents both opportunity and risk. Wider access opens new partnerships and global reach. But volatility is the price of acceleration. Inflation, conflict, or political instability can swing exchange rates overnight. A budget approved in January can be underwater by October when the dollar shifts against a local currency.
Too many organizations still send funds “the way we always have,” only to discover that 2% to 10% of value has evaporated before the money even reaches the field. That isn’t just a finance issue, it’s a stewardship issue. Leaders who ignore financial volatility are simplifying their workflows at the expense of the resources God entrusted to them for the mission.
Navigating the Crossroads with Faith
Stack these two emerging trends in both technology and finance—and you arrive at a precarious crossroads. The same “roads” that allow us to communicate instantly and move money in minutes can just as easily become choke points when systems fail, regulations tighten, or currencies swing.
Scripture reminds us: “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” (Prov. 27:12)
To ignore the risks is naïve.
To prepare for them is stewardship.
And, to leverage them is faith expressed through wisdom.
So, should we be worried? Not at all. Just as Paul did not wander the Roman roads blindly—but used them strategically to advance the gospel—so too can we. God has placed us in such a time as this—not simply to weather the storm of change, but to harness modern technology and innovations in finance to strategically advance the gospel.
He has entrusted this generation of leaders with new “roads”—faster, broader, and more powerful than any before.
He has entrusted this generation of leaders with new “roads”—faster, broader, and more powerful than any before. If we approach them with prudence and courage, the very systems that seem daunting can become the pathways that carry the good news to literally everyone, everywhere.
