The Overflow Effect

Living in the overflow

I was irritated, and it showed. Frustration bubbled up and voiced its scowl. I lashed out at an equally frustrated team member, and the conversation became a disaster. Regret quickly followed, and though my apology was accepted, embarrassment and shame lingered for days. Waking in the night, I would ask myself, “How could I lose it so recklessly?” I am a leader, a person of integrity. I take care of others.

The fault lies in the overflow.

Have you ever met someone whose presence drew you in? Their love for God and others was contagious. There was strength, compassion, and vitality flowing from within them. It was not personality or emotion alone; it came from a deeper place.

A Yielded Life

The Overflow Effect is the unmistakable presence of God in someone’s life that impacts both the person living in it and everyone around them.

Someone may naturally have gifts that attract people, but living in the overflow is much more. I have a friend whose Overflow Effect motivates me to seek and serve God more deeply. The Overflow Effect changes how you approach your relationship with Father God, allowing Christ to become your closest brother and the Holy Spirit your constant companion. It is not simply belief; it is immersion in relationship.

Many know the soul includes our mind, will, emotions, and intellect. Yet the Hebrew word for soul, Nephesh, means the whole self, a complete living being. You were created to live wholly connected to God, not led only by emotions and thoughts. Psalm 42:7 says, “Deep calls to deep.” The eternal deep of Father God is calling your soul deeper into him.

A life yielded to fellowship with Christ produces The Overflow Effect.

Jesus explains, “Whoever believes in Me, as scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38). Notice the flow is natural. As you spend time with Jesus, hunger for him increases. You begin yielding to the Holy Spirit’s counsel, and God’s Zoe life naturally flows through you. The Greek word “Zoe” refers to the divine, eternal life of God, the life you were created to live. A life yielded to fellowship with Christ produces The Overflow Effect.

Looking back at my leadership meltdown, I realized that for months I had allowed the “work of ministry” to overtake my connection with God. Budget deficits, retention concerns, board battles, and facility issues consumed my thoughts. Whether I could solve them or not, I had become disconnected from my source of life and strength.

Staying in The Overflow

So how do we stay in the overflow?

  • Stay hungry. “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled” (Matt. 5:6). As leaders, it is easy to become spiritually passive while remaining professionally productive. We have access to endless Biblical resources, yet our minds stay consumed with worries. Ask the Holy Spirit to deepen your desire for him, then follow his direction into greater growth and fellowship.
  • Stay in him. Devotionals, sermon preparation, and ministry planning are valuable, but they are not substitutes for intimacy with God. God wants you… your whole self, longing for him. Take time to simply be with him through Scripture, stillness, worship, or prayer. Let some moments remain just between you and God. His outpouring during those times is priceless.
  • Stay humble. As leaders, pride can quietly invite God’s resistance into our lives. “God goes against the willful proud; God gives grace to the willing humble” (James 4:6 MSG). Humility means being willing to be corrected. Ask God to expose crooked thoughts, unhealthy allegiances, and harmful mindsets. Put humility on daily.

A full cup is not the goal. The goal is overflow. That’s because overflow fills others.

Why does this matter? Every person was created to reflect God’s image. When his life overflows from you, it impacts those around you, and his image is reflected through them as well. Your life becomes enriched as you experience God through the people he touches around you. Overflow comes full circle.

This is why I Corinthians 9:19 becomes essential: “Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a servant to everyone, to win as many as possible.”

Results of The Overflow

I have seen leaders with hardened attitudes softened by the presence of God. I have seen organizational cultures transformed because a leader pursued personal worship with the Creator. Also, I have seen contentious staff become collaborative partners through a leader’s intentional fellowship with the Lord. And I have even seen myself become more like Christ and less influenced by the world simply by asking God for a deeper hunger that only he can satisfy.

Live in the overflow.

Are you tired of living from an empty soul? Are you ready for the life God desires for you?

It is time.

Live in the overflow.
