God Is at Work

The Bible begins with a God who works. From creation to redemption, God is actively at work in the world. He creates, sustains, provides, redeems, and will one day restore all things. His work is purposeful, creative, and life-giving. As people created in God’s image, we are invited to participate in His work.

We Were Created to Work

Human beings are created in the image and likeness of the Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:27). Because God is a worker, we too are created to work.

Work is not merely a means of earning a living. It is an essential part of our identity and dignity as God’s image-bearers. Through our work, we reflect God’s creativity, wisdom, care, and love for His creation.

God’s Original Design for Work

Work was part of God’s good creation long before sin entered the world. In the Garden of Eden, God placed Adam “to work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15). Adam was entrusted with cultivating the garden and naming the animals, exercising wise stewardship over God’s creation.

God also established a healthy rhythm of work and rest. After six days of creating the heavens and the earth, God rested on the seventh day, providing a pattern for human flourishing. Meaningful work and intentional rest are both gifts from God.

Our Work Matters to God

Our work is part of God’s continuing work in the world. He invites us to partner with Him in cultivating creation, serving others, building communities, and participating in His redemptive purposes. Through our various vocations, we help fulfill God’s mandate to be fruitful, steward the earth, and contribute to the flourishing of society.

The Bible makes no distinction between “sacred” and “secular” work. All honest work has value before God. The work of a business owner, teacher, farmer, engineer, artist, homemaker, healthcare worker, skilled tradesperson, or public servant is no less significant than the work of a pastor or missionary.

Every vocation can become an act of worship. When we faithfully use our gifts to serve others and glorify God, our workplace becomes a place where we live out our calling and participate in God’s mission. True joy at work is found not merely in what we accomplish, but in knowing that our daily work has eternal significance because it is done in partnership with God and for His glory.
