A Call to All Christian Leaders
Imagine leading in a Christian organization where people are joyfully engaged in the mission. The staff is alive in Christ and spiritually formed through their daily work. Trust, unity, and joy are the norm. It is a place where people grow in Christ through their work.
That kind of culture is not a fantasy. For Christian leaders, it is a sacred calling.
A Biblical Vision for Flourishing
Scripture gives us a vision of flourishing in the word shalom. Shalom is more than the absence of conflict; it is wholeness—right relationship with God, with one another, and with the work God has given us.
Jesus fulfills this vision: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). The word He uses for “full” (perissos) means overflowing, beyond expectations. That is His desire for His people—and it is the kind of culture we are called to cultivate.
The Spiritual Weight of Culture
Culture cannot be delegated to the Human Resources Department. It is a spiritual trust. When culture is unhealthy, faith grows weary, conflict consumes energy, mission drifts, and gifted, mission-aligned people quietly leave. Toxicity distorts our witness and turns people away from Christ.
Leaders as Shepherds of Culture
God cares how His people are led. In Ezekiel 34, He rebukes the shepherds of Israel for feeding themselves instead of the flock, while Jesus, the Good Shepherd, washes His disciples’ feet (John 13) and lays down His life for the sheep.
Today, Christian executives, pastors, and nonprofit leaders embrace the call to shepherd not only people but also the culture—the spiritual and relational environment in which those people live and work. That stewardship begins with seeing reality clearly.
Measure What Matters
Proverbs 27:23 exhorts us, “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks; give careful attention to your herds.” In our context, that means paying attention to the health of our workplace cultures.
A practical step you can take is to assess your culture. Honest, data-informed feedback reveals where people are flourishing and where they are hurting, so you can lead with humility and courage.
