What is Your Source of Security? By Dr. Zenet Maramara

God Is The Source of Security
God remains the source of security regardless of circumstances. Economic instability, war, inflation, or crisis do not change the reality that He is sovereign and in control. When society becomes anxious, self-protective, and divided, the Christian’s witness of hope becomes even more visible.
This witness points to a different Kingdom and reflects the character of God Himself—the Giver, Provider, and Sustainer. Through acts of love, mercy, and compassion, believers proclaim the Gospel in tangible ways. The early Church in Acts grew not only through preaching but also through radical, countercultural generosity.
Giving Even When Resources Feel Scarce
In difficult times, the instinct is to hold tightly to what we have. Biblical generosity, however, is marked by open hands even in hardship.
Consider the widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings. Though she and her son were down to their last meal during a famine, she chose to share what little she had with the prophet Elijah. God, in turn, multiplied her provision and sustained them throughout the crisis.
Likewise, the poor widow who offered her two small coins became one of Scripture’s greatest examples of generosity. She trusted God beyond visible security and believed Him to be her provider even when the future looked uncertain.
The size of the gift does not measure biblical generosity, but by the depth of trust behind it.
Prioritizing People Over Possessions
Crisis has a way of exposing what we truly value. Genuine generosity shifts our focus from self-preservation to neighborly love. The Good Samaritan did not wait for stability before helping someone in need. He responded immediately with compassion and sacrificial care, even at personal cost.
In the same way, Christians today can respond to economic hardship by helping families with food, supporting community pantries, sharing resources, or caring for those whose livelihoods have been disrupted. During the COVID-19 pandemic, generosity became visible as ordinary people shared whatever they could with others in need. Similar opportunities arise whenever economic pressures intensify, and families struggle to make ends meet. Biblical generosity reminds us that people matter more than protecting our lifestyle.
Sacrificial Giving
In 2 Corinthians, the Macedonian believers gave out of “extreme poverty” yet with “overflowing joy.” They were able to give freely because they first gave themselves fully to God. Their generosity flowed from hearts transformed by the God of abundance and grace.
Their giving was not reactive or convenient. It was intentional and sacrificial. Hardship does not cancel generosity; it often purifies it into something more Christlike.
As the old hymn says, “The things of earth grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.” A faithful steward holds lightly to the things of this world because their eyes are fixed on eternal realities. This freedom produces joy-filled generosity, even when giving comes at high personal cost.
Courageous Faith Instead of Fear-Based Hoarding
Economic crises often trigger a scarcity mindset: What if I do not have enough?
Biblical generosity responds differently. It resists fear-driven hoarding and instead practices contentment, trust, and faith. It sees giving not as loss, but as participation in God’s provision.
Jesus’ teaching in Matthew is central: trust the Father who already knows your needs. In this sense, generosity becomes a spiritual act of resistance against fear.
Biblical generosity in hard times is not only compassionate; it is also wise and strategic.
Faithful stewards seek to maximize impact by:
- Supporting ministries and initiatives that address urgent needs
- Collaborating rather than duplicating efforts within communities
- Investing in long-term solutions such as livelihoods, resilience, and systems that help people recover sustainably
The goal is not simply to “give more,” but to give wisely and well.
In difficult seasons, generosity becomes more than an act of charity. It becomes a testimony of faith, a declaration of trust in God’s provision, and a living witness to the Gospel.
