The Lagrange Effect and Your Leadership By Dr. Sherilyn Emberton

The Lagrange Point and A Leader’s Response
In space, the Lagrange point is where an object is equally balanced between two gravitational pulls. In leadership, we experience a similar tension — moments when the “Lagrange effect” forces us to choose between competing pulls, seldom between two obvious goods.
As leaders, we often live in that gravitational midpoint:
- Right vs. wrong
- Left vs. right
- Past vs. future
The Organizational Tension
On our campuses and in our organizations, this tension surfaces in even more practical ways:
- An individual’s desire vs. the group’s good
- Financial bottom line vs. employee well-being (“no margin, no mission; not for profit, not for loss”)
- Good vs. great
- Lawful vs. expedient
These are not hypothetical dilemmas; they are the lived reality of daily leadership.
Reflect and Act
It is always wise to pause. God honors thoughtful process. Yet paralysis of analysis is real. Scripture reminds us that “lukewarm” is not God’s preference. Reflection without action breeds stagnation.
It is equally faithful to move. The Bible is full of action figures who stepped forward in faith — sometimes without perfect clarity, always with courage.
There is safety in a multitude of counselors. Wisdom is found in shared discernment. Still, leadership requires resolve: at the end of the day, the buck stops with you. The Lagrange effect is not a place to fear — it is the crucible of leadership. Our task is to hold tension faithfully, seek wisdom humbly, and act boldly for the greater good.
Leadership is not about escaping tension, but about faithfully navigating it.
