Serving in a Faith-Based Nonprofit
The Call to Faith-based Nonprofit Service
A faith-based nonprofit is an organization whose values are based on faith and beliefs. The activities of these organizations are rooted in faith. And most often, that draws their leaders, staff, or volunteers to it.
Individuals in faith-based nonprofits have a sense of calling and a desire to serve the mission within an enriching community of like-minded people. Therefore, finding service in a Christ-centered nonprofit can provide significant personal and spiritual benefits.
God has uniquely designed each of us. He declares we are fearfully and wonderfully made, his poem, masterpiece, and workmanship. And from his unique design for each of us, he gives us assignments to steward that advance his purpose. A purpose that Scripture states was determined before you took your first breath. In a faith-based nonprofit, you may intimately find God’s assignment for a season and his call for your life.
For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast, for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
The cause of a faith-based organization is found in its mission and vision. Both mission and vision focus on the core activities and the difference in the world the organization makes. Mission and vision clarify the organization’s unique place in advancing a Kingdom outcome. This is where you discover if your passion and a need for your skills collide.
For as in one body, we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
When you find a faith-based nonprofit where you are aligned, heart, mind, and soul, you will also find a life-giving community where you belong. There are over 87,000 faith-based nonprofits nationwide. God is at work in and through all of them. And for those who serve in them, they are advancing God’s common good.
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone, it is the same God at work.
Now to each one, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
