A Biblical Vision for a Christian Leadership Community By Donna Bostick

A Community as One Body with Many Members
We often talk about community, especially in Christian leadership circles. But if we’re honest, many of us still feel isolated.
We lead teams, attend meetings, and serve faithfully. And yet, real belonging can feel hard to come by. For those of us committed to Christian leadership, the question is not whether community matters, but how we intentionally lead in ways that reflect our shared life in Christ.
Paul gives us a different picture in Romans,
“So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”
Romans 12:5
That verse is simple, but it’s also deeply challenging—especially for those of us in leadership.
Community Starts With Who We Are
Paul doesn’t start with structure or strategy. He starts with identity. We are one body in Christ. That matters.
Christian community isn’t something we invent or engineer. It already exists because of Christ. Our role as leaders is not to manufacture unity, but to steward it well.
This verse also confronts how easily we slip into measuring people by function or performance. In the body of Christ, people don’t earn belonging. They already belong. Every person matters, not just for what they do, but for who they are.
Unity doesn’t erase differences—it depends on them.
Belonging Changes How We Lead
When we really believe that “each member belongs to all the others,” leadership begins to shift.
Authority becomes less about control and more about responsibility. Success becomes less individual and more shared. We start asking different questions—not just Did we hit the goal? But did we care for the people? Did we strengthen the body?
Belonging builds trust. When people know they are valued, they engage more fully. They speak more honestly. They stay when things get hard. And this applies to leaders, too. Romans 12 doesn’t place leaders above the body. It places us within it. Leadership is not a solo calling. We need community just as much as the people we serve.
Unity Without Everyone Being the Same
Paul’s image of the body protects us from two extremes: expecting everyone to think and act the same or allowing everyone to operate independently. The body is unified but not uniform.
Different gifts, perspectives, and callings are not problems to solve. They are strengths to steward.
As leaders, we have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to create environments where people bring their whole selves. That means listening well, sharing leadership, and making room for voices that don’t sound like our own. When we do that, we demonstrate trust in God’s design, not just our own preferences.
Community Requires Intention
Community doesn’t happen by accident, especially in busy leadership environments. Like prayer or spiritual formation, it requires intention.
If we want Romans 12:5 to be more than a verse we quote, we must practice it. We do that by praying together, creating space for honest conversation, inviting collaboration, and addressing conflict with grace. Over time, these practices shape culture. They form organizations that reflect Christ not only in their mission but also in their relationships.
An Invitation to Lead Together
This is why Christian Leadership Alliance exists. CLA is built on the belief that leaders are best formed in community, not in isolation. Through leadership development, peer connection, and Christ-centered formation, Christian Leadership Alliance equips Christian leaders to lead faithfully and together.
Becoming a member of Christian Leadership Alliance is one way to live out Romans 12:5 tangibly—many members, one body, united in Christ. In a world marked by division, the way we lead together matters. When we choose belonging, humility, and shared purpose, we offer a compelling witness to the reconciling work of Christ.
Pay the Gift of Community Forward
Community changes leaders—and leaders change the world.
Today, you can pay forward the experience of learning in a Christ-centered community through the Christian Leadership Alliance Day of Giving on March 20, 2026.
Every $50 gift makes it possible for a Christian leader outside of the United States to receive 9-month access to an interactive learning community—equipping them with biblical leadership training, trusted peer connection, and practical tools to strengthen their ministry.
Since 2020, more than 11,000 leaders have engaged in this global learning experience. This year, we’re trusting God to reach 1,000 more leaders serving faithfully in diverse, often challenging contexts.
When you give, you don’t just donate—you expand the body of Christ. You strengthen leaders. You multiply impact.
Let’s pay the gift of learning in community forward—together.
