A Generosity Lesson from My Granny By Donna Bostick

My Granny and Her $5 Blessings
Some of my earliest lessons about generosity didn’t come from a sermon; they came from my Granny.
When I was in school, she used to tuck $5 bills under the edge of our tablecloth. Not in a purse. Not in a savings account. Under the tablecloth.
Every so often, she would quietly slide one of those bills out and say, “You never know when someone’s going to need a little help.”
Those $5 bills weren’t extra. They were intentional.
She kept them there for emergencies. For someone short on lunch money or as lift for a neighbor in need. It was always a quiet moment when generosity could make a difference.
When It All Becomes Clear
As a child, I didn’t fully understand it. But I remember the feeling that she always had something set aside for someone else. Our table wasn’t just for meals. It was a place where generosity lived.
Looking back, I realized my Granny was living Proverbs 11 long before I understood the verse. Her world was large because her heart was open. She trusted that even small amounts, given faithfully, could bless someone.
And they did.
Generosity Is About Trust
At its core, biblical generosity is about trust. Ask yourself these questions:
- Do we believe God will provide?
- Do we believe there’s enough?
- Do we believe He can multiply what we release?
The world tells us to hold tightly. Scripture invites us to open our hands.
When we give, we’re saying, “God, I trust You more than I trust my bank account.” And that kind of faith stretches us. It grows us. It enlarges our world.
My Granny didn’t have endless resources. But she had a generous spirit. And that spirit shaped me.
