Work as Worship and The Gift of Rest

Remember today God’s gift of rest.

Labor Day is a gift that lets us step away from emails, meetings, deadlines, decisions, and never-ending lists to reflect on something that occupies a significant part of our lives: work.

From a Christian perspective, work is more than a job, a title, or a collection of responsibilities. It is part of our stewardship. Whether we lead a ministry, serve a nonprofit organization, manage a team, build a business, care for a family, or quietly serve behind the scenes, our work can express faithfulness to God. For Christian leaders, that changes not only what we do, but why we do it.

Work as an Act of Worship

Scripture reminds us:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Colossians 3:23-24

Those words can change the way we look at Monday morning.

Our work is ultimately not about impressing a supervisor, earning recognition, building a résumé, or collecting another accomplishment. We bring our best because the One we ultimately serve is Christ. That gives purpose to both the extraordinary assignments and the ordinary ones. Yes, even the meeting that probably could have been an email.

When we offer our work to God, leadership becomes stewardship. Excellence becomes worship and the posture of our heart. Serving others becomes ministry. Even tasks that seem small can become opportunities for faithfulness.

Our Worth Is Not Our Work

Another truth Christian leaders especially need to remember: while God values our work, our value does not come from our work. That distinction matters. Leadership can easily become a scoreboard. We measure attendance, revenue, engagement, growth, fundraising, programs, outcomes, and countless other indicators. Metrics are valuable. Good stewardship requires us to pay attention to them. But none of those numbers determine our worth before God.

Our identity is rooted in Christ, not productivity. That can be difficult for leaders to remember because there will always be another goal to reach, problem to solve, person to serve, or item waiting on the to-do list.

Labor Day offers a timely reminder that we are more than what we produce.

Work and Rest in God’s Perfect Pace

A biblical view of work also includes rest, which leaders sometimes struggle to embrace.

From the beginning, God established a rhythm of work and rest. Rest is not simply the reward we receive when absolutely everything is finished—because most leaders already know that day may never arrive. Sometimes faithful leadership means pressing forward. And sometimes it means trusting God enough to stop.

Close the laptop. Put down the phone. Spend time with people you love. Worship. Take a walk. Enjoy God’s creation. Laugh. Eat something you didn’t have to consume while answering an email.

Rest reminds us of something important: God is still God when we stop working.

Perspective on Work and Leadership

At Christian Leadership Alliance, we believe developing Christian leaders means developing the whole leader. God cares about the work He entrusts to us, but He also cares deeply about the people we are becoming as we do it. So perhaps Labor Day allows you to ask a different question.

Not simply:

“What am I accomplishing?”

But also:

“Who am I becoming through the work God has entrusted to me?“

This Labor Day, whatever God has placed before you in this season, steward it faithfully, serve wholeheartedly, rest intentionally, and remember whom you ultimately serve.
