Don’t Try to Be Important – Do What is Important!

Leaders are, of course, important. But sometimes, we can begin to think we are more important than we are. Or perhaps we forget how we got here. This is sage advice I heard from a friend some years ago.

Remember the Apostle Paul’s words in his letter to Cornith,

“For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?”

I Corinthians 4:7

Everything I have, I have been given. Let’s not reign as kings and queens but as servants.

I work in many countries where they highly respect positions and those in authority. Whenever I am introduced to our audience as “President & CEO,” I tell the applauders two things: “I am not here because I am important. I am here because you are important.”

Only in Reaching Souls International does my title mean anything or appear in any hierarchy flow chart. We are all the same outside this organizational framework: brothers and sisters in Christ.

In a heartbeat, I can think that I am more than I am. My heart wanders towards pride quickly, which God hates and actively resists.

But he gives us more grace. This is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
    but shows favor to the humble.”

James 4:6

Don’t try to be important try to do what is important.

 “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”

Romans 12:3

Remember that today, we serve those entrusted to our care and leadership.
