My Identity Equals My Leadership Dr. Kayon Cameron
It All Begins with Identity
Your identity determines your leadership. The word says to love others as you love yourself, but many people forget to invest time in learning themselves. Identity is formed based on culture, environment, influencers, and so much more.
Today leaders must have an identity rooted in Christ to know they belong to build a community of leaders who believe they belong.
Do You Love Yourself?
A simple question, but many people struggle to give an answer. What if you spent time gaining wisdom on how to love yourself?
“The one who gets wisdom loves life; the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.”
~ Proverbs 19:8
A key element of leadership is gaining wisdom and many times it is taught in the context of learning how to effectively lead others. What if you spent time gaining wisdom on how to love yourself so that you can effectively lead others?
Reflection Points for Wisdom and Understanding:
- How you love yourself is reflected in your identity
- Your identity impacts how you lead others
- Evaluating your identity and measuring it to Biblical truths is a lifestyle
- Godly Self-Development is another level of Self-Development
Reaction vs Action
As a leader, it is very important to take action rather than react to a situation in order to not cause unintentional harm to others. When you are stressed and pressed to get things done and someone on your team makes an unintentional error, do you react or take action?
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.”
~ Luke 6:31
The majority of our immediate reactions to situations are based on internal issues that are brewing in our hearts that we need God to heal. When God has dealt with those areas we are able to better take action as a leader rather than cause harm by reacting to minor errors amongst the team.
Reflection Points to Evaluate Your Subconscious Actions:
- Evaluate your anchor points
- Bring those areas to God
- Learn from those moments
- It is easy to react, but it takes a leader to act
Be Intentional
As you invest in your identity, you are able to invest in the identity of others on your team. Making a point to recognize their successes and support their growth.
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”
~ 1 Thessalonians 5:11
A team can only go as far as its leader is capable of going. If you are investing in loving yourself, then you can wholeheartedly invest in the people around you so they in turn can learn to love themselves.
Reflection Points to Build Up Other’s Identity:
- What would your team say about you?
- How you lead may have a lasting impression
- Your team learns from you as you learn from them
- Encourage each person to function in their God-given gifts
Jesus Replied
“‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.“
~Matthew 22:37-39
All men fall short in their leadership practices, but God gave us the best formula for how we can become great leaders. We must put our focus on God and allow him to show us how to love ourselves so that we in turn can love others. As we invest in reconciling our identity to his Biblical truths, we are free to invest in the identity of our team on our journey to becoming effective leaders.
