Lessons for Leaders: The Heart

In our capitalistic society, much of one’s success or notoriety is based on performance.  If we do well, if we are successful, we are esteemed and valued.

Even in the church, maybe especially in the church, our worth is often measured by performance.  How many attended?  How big is your budget?  How many souls did you convince?

However, man looks at the outward.  God looks at the heart.  He sees the inner workings of a person.

Jesus said outward performance is based on the inner workings of the heart.  He says: A bad tree can’t produce good fruit.  Neither can a good tree produce bad fruit.  A good person produces good deeds from a good heart.  Whatever is in your heart determines what you say.

For leaders who tend to emphasize performance, I say: start with the heart.  Develop the inner person, beginning with a strong and vital relationship with God.  Then ask Him to build strength of character, wisdom, insight, compassion, sensitivity, and integrity.  Out of that inner life will grow a productive, effective performance that will please God and affect those around you.

Start with the heart.
