The Difference Mentoring Makes
Mentoring a younger or even an older leader builds for the future. For me, there is incredible pleasure in passing on (when asked) some of what I have learned in leadership over the years. When there is structure and intentionality the benefits flow both ways. The most productive are the mentoring relationships that go on for a set time on a regular basis. As older and more experienced leaders we have both the privilege and obligation to help succeeding generations – not expecting to tell them what to do, but rather to let them pick and choose from our experience. ~ Jerry White, President & Chairman Emeritus, The Navigators
Where would I be if someone had not mentored me? From Godly parents to my accounting professor to those whom I worked for and with throughout my career, I have been the recipient of a lifetime of mentoring. Undoubtedly, I was a slow learner at times and some of the mentoring experiences were more fun than others. Still—my mind often and fondly retraces my steps that were strongly impacted by those who thought I had the potential to grow and make a contribution in life and, more importantly, in God’s Kingdom.~ Dan Busby, President, ECFA
The mentors in my life have been incredibly instrumental in my spiritual and professional life. They have helped guide me through tough situations and given me insight that I have been able to carry into my life. I have been truly blessed! ~ Bethany Palmer, President, Envoy Financial
I once worked with a mentor for a period of time and learned a great deal from him. While in that safe, nonjudgmental environment I was able to learn and ask many basic questions, ones I probably would not have asked in public. I was always comfortable showing how little I actually knew without jeopardizing my leadership position or being embarrassed. This freedom helped me really dig into areas in which I was truly a neophyte, and learn a great deal. ~ Tom Okarma – CEO, Vantage Point
I know the privilege of serving as a mentor to many as well as being mentored by a couple of amazing people. As a mentor, it is an extreme blessing to invest others and watch them grow in knowledge and wisdom. It been a chance for me to give back what my mentors have given me. My mentors have poured into me and allowed me the opportunity to ask questions and learn from their life experience. They have served as spiritual advisers, challenging me to be the best that I can be in roles at home and work. They offered encouraged whenever I felt like I was falling short and celebrated when I achieved success. ~ Vonna Laue – Partner, CapinCrouse
A great mentor is worth more than gold. They intangibly gift you their confidence to accomplish more than you could without them. For me my greatest advancements came when I had great mentors close to me. ~ Guy Richards, CEO, Abiah
