Don’t Look Back By Dr. Bob Snyder

In what direction are you prone to look?

Whatever direction you look, is where you are prone to go.

Anyone who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is not fit for the Kingdom of God.

~ Luke 9:62, NIV

Contemporary farmers with state-of-the-art tractors plow the fields with GPS and sensing devices. However, I live several miles from Amish farmers who plow the fields with horses. I have been told that they need to fix their eyes on a spot at the end of the field to plow a straight line; otherwise the plow line will be crooked.

Why does Jesus tell the men on the road that to follow Him, they could not look back? He knew that looking back was dangerous and led to a crooked path; the moment was “now” to focus on Him.

I have some crooked lines in my field. Jesus is telling me not to look back but instead look straight ahead at Him.

The writer of Hebrews instructs me on all I need to know.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,  fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer, and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

~ Hebrews 12:1-2, NIV
