Indifference or Commitment By Ed McDowell

The Invitation to Commitment

The invitation of Jesus Christ is a commitment to have relationship with Him and the Church to reach the world with the invitation to be reconciled to God and live victoriously with Him forever. This invitation to hear Jesus Christ knocking and speaking will always be accepted and responded to by Jesus sitting down in fellowship and inviting us to follow Him.

Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.

Revelation 3:20 NLT

Reflection

Jesus is inviting us into a committed relationship with him.

For many in the body of Christ, we have become indifferent.  We have become indifferent because our material affluence has created a false sense of self-sufficiency.  We have become very pleased with our own sense of comfort and well-being, no longer recognizing the true reality of our situation.

Earlier in the same chapter of the Bible, it says it this way:

You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see. I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.”

Revelation 3:17-19 NLT

Encouragement

Jesus is advising and inviting us to set aside our indifference for the things of God and the need of this world for God. He is asking us to be committed to Him and with Him.  He will lead and provide for us in overcoming the brokenness of this world.  He will help us in sharing His love with the world.  His provisions will be the ones that last and stand the test of eternity.

At the end of this chapter is a striking image that is unheard of among kings and people of power:

Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.

Revelation 3:21 NLT

For those who step away from the indifference to God and live a committed relationship with Jesus, we don’t just barely get into the Kingdom of God (the attitude of indifference), we sit with Him in victory on His throne (the life of commitment to Christ).

Prayer

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for calling out our indifference.  Thank You for challenging our false sense of security and self-sufficiency in our own accomplishments. Thank You for reminding us of our true reality. Thank You for disciplining and correcting us with an invitation to a committed relationship with You.  We do answer the door to Your knocking.  We do hear your voice. We do invite You in for a life-changing relationship to be shared with the world. We receive your promise of living victoriously with You forever.

In Your name, Jesus, we pray,

Amen
