Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.

Colossians 4:6 NLT

Have you ever connected the principle that having the right response for others is tied to your gracious and attractive conversation?

These words from the Apostle Paul come as part of the closing words in his letter to the followers of Christ in Colossae. They weren’t just words for them; they are words for us today.

Reflection

Recently, I became aware of an oversight error I had made in a leadership decision I was working through with an individual I have served with for a long time. The potential risk was a misunderstanding and hurt.

The individual’s conversation was gracious and attractive when I reached out to make the necessary course corrections. The course correction was well received. Our conversation continued with him reaching into my life with genuine interest and concern about my well-being. 

I was on the receiving end of another living out Paul’s words towards me. It was a beautiful gift given to me.

Insight

Gracious and attractive conversation flows from a heart and mind connected to Christ. Conversation that has these qualities makes it much easier to speak the truth, confess mistakes, and support each other in how to best live with each other.

Encouragement

Evaluate the last few conversations you have had. Were they defined as being gracious and attractive? Ask the Holy Spirit to help us be increasingly focused on these core qualities of good communication.

Prayer

Dear Jesus,

Thank You for these words from the Apostle Paul. 

Please help us grow in developing a conversation that is gracious and attractive. This makes communicating truth and confession much more accessible, creating better outcomes for everyone involved.
